By MICHAEL BAGINSKI/ With planes roaring overhead – somehow fitting for a travel event – the Toronto Skal Club attracted members and friends from as far away as Calgary last week on a picture-perfect day on the course to celebrate the tourney’s remarkable 70th year.
Taking place at Royal Woodbine, a jewel of a course improbably tucked into a space adjacent to Pearson airport, where planes passed by so close you could almost touch them (“you should be see the Emirates plane that comes past,” a groundskeeper marvelled), a full complement of golfers and lunch-only guests gathered in the Skal spirit of “doing business with friends” – and, of course, having a little bit of fun.
Sponsors were many, notable among them exoticca, Let’s Texas, Jamaica Tourist Board, Virgin Atlantic/Visit Britain, Soft Voyage, TICO, and Barker Print Solutions. And a portion of proceeds from the event, including silent auction, were donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank.
