SHORT NOTICE SHIFT: Late booking trend creates new opportunities

New first-party search data from Expedia Group reveals a clear shift toward shorter booking windows, with travellers increasingly planning trips closer to departure than they did a year ago.

Key findings of the report show that searches in the seven- to 13-day window grew 25% year over year globally while the strongest YoY increases in this short-term window were in Latin America (+30%), North America (+25%) and Australia-Pacific (+25%).

Demand is also being shaped by timely event-driven travel, with searches to the U.S. and Canada for this summer’s big soccer tournament up 10% YoY, and Mexico up 15% YoY.

The data points to a more dynamic and less predictable booking environment in 2026, as travellers respond to specific events, regional disruption and shifting confidence levels rather than following one fixed planning pattern, says Expedia, noting that, for travel agents, that means being ready to capture demand at shorter notice with competitive rates, broad supply, and the ability to move quickly when clients are ready to book.

“Travel planning is becoming more flexible, with many clients waiting longer to book and responding more directly to events, pricing and changing circumstances,” said Robin Lawther, VP of Expedia TAAP and Business Development.

“For travel agents,” he adds, “this creates a clear opportunity to add value in the moment… helping clients move quickly, navigate choice confidently and secure the right trip even on a shorter booking window.”
