PUBS, PATIOS & BARS: Where in the world to find a cheap pint (it’s not Canada)

A British company whose mission is “to help people all over the world make better financial decisions” – and what could be more important than finding cheap beer? – has deduced that the average cost of a pint in Canada is about $3.68 (£1.98) more than the global average.

The recent study conducted by finder.com compiled data on the average prices of beer in the most populated cities around the world. The analysis looked at 166 countries.

It found that a pint of beer costs $4.45 (£2.60) on average. In Canada, the average beer costs $7.80 (£4.58), making it significantly more expensive than the global average.

Amongst the findings:

• A pint of beer in Canada is 76.1% more expensive than world average
• The cheapest pints of beer on earth are sold in Burundi at an average price of $.78 (£0.46)
• 4 out of the 5 most expensive cities with the most expensive beer are in the Middle East
• Reykjavik sells the most expensive beer Europe with an average price of $13.30 (£7.8) per pint
• The top 5 cities with the cheapest beer are all in Africa

The most expensive pints of beer in the world on average are sold in Qatar, with higher prices on average than runners-up UAE $16.93 (£9.93) and Oman $14.80 (£8.68). Other top wallet-busters include Iceland and Lebanon.

Following Iceland, the most expensive places to drink a pint in Europe are Norway $12.16 (£7.13), closely followed by Switzerland $11.15 (£6.54) and Finland $10.79 (£6.33).

Perhaps surprisingly, the US is the 9th most expensive country in the world for beer on average, with a pint costing $10.61 (£6.22) on average. The UK is slightly less expensive, with the average pint of beer costing $10.06 (£5.90), more than double the world average. Meanwhile, a pint down under in Australia will set you back $8.53 (£5.01) on average.
