PORTER EXPANDS ROUTES AT MET: Introduces fuel surcharges

Porter Airlines has announced plans to offer flights on a dozen routes from the revitalized Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET). The airline says flights to and from the airport in Longueuil, Que., on Montreal’s south shore will begin on June 15.

The routes from MET will be served by both De Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft and Embraer E195-E2 jets.

The new flights to cities across Canada are in addition to routes Porter already offers from Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.

Porter says the move will give passengers more choice, flexibility and convenience by offering service from both of Montreal’s airports.

Porter began in 2006 using Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, offering service from the city’s downtown.

Introduces fuel surcharge

Rising global fuel prices are pushing up the cost of flying. Porter Airlines is the latest carrier to raise prices in response to fuel costs being driven up by the US/Israel conflict with Iran. Porter announced Monday it is introducing a temporary fuel surcharge on all VIPorter flight redemptions.

The surcharge is $40 per flight, when booking using points collected through the loyalty program. In a statement, the company said the adjustment will be applied as a “peak surcharge” to each passenger, each way. The update went into effect for all new VIPorter flight bookings as of March 23, but existing bookings were not affected. The company said that as oil prices stabilize and return to normal levels, it expects to return to standard pricing.

“We want to be transparent about why this change is necessary,” it said. “Fuel represents the highest cost of airline operations, and this surcharge allows us to maintain the number of points required for redemption.” A spokesperson said that for standard bookings, base fares are adjusted to account for variable fuel prices on a route-by-route basis. “Any changes vary by region and are included in the total price customers always see,” she said.
