After only two years serving Canada from its base in Hamilton, Ont., PLAY Airlines is pulling out of the market. The Icelandic low-cost carrier’s schedule shows that starting in late April it will stop its four flights per week from YHM to its home base in Reykjavik, Iceland, which it uses as a hub for trips to Europe.
PLAY did not respond immediately to questions on why it is leaving or whether customers with bookings beyond April are being refunded, however the Toronto Star reported that officials at John c. Munroe Hamilton International Airport confirmed the cancellation.
While not mentioning Canada specifically, PLAY says on its website that it intends to “focus more on leisure destinations,” a strategy it has been implementing during the past few months and “plans to continue in 2025.”
It further noted decreased capacity in December due to leasing one of its planes to an American firm.
The airline also noted that its “strategic shift” to serving leisure destinations would see it expanding its flight schedule to “sunny destinations” in 2025, including new and increased service to Spain and Portugal, with PLAY CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson stating, “I am confident (this) will be well received by Icelanders” and others travelling via its hub.
