LOS CABOS TEES UP NEW EXPERIENCES

With an increase in flights this fall/winter season, including a direct Air Canada flight from Montreal that started in December, Los Cabos is anticipating an increase in Canadian visitors to the already popular sun destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

According to the Los Cabos Tourism Board, airline seat capacity from Canada was projected to reach 1.24 million this fall/winter, reflecting a 3% increase over the same period the year previous.

As the second-largest international market after the United States, Canadian travellers play a crucial role in the region’s tourism and cultural vibrancy, according to Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

In 2024 visits from Vancouver led the way with 42% of flights originating there, followed by Calgary at 25%, Toronto at 15% and Edmonton at 9%. With its direct flight, visits originating in Montreal are expected to rise dramatically.

Travel advisors continue to be pivotal in guiding travellers to Los Cabos, with 30% of visitors booking through agents.

At the recent Virtuoso Travel Week conference, Esponda showcased the region’s attractions, including the vibrant Cabo Pulmo National Park, renowned for its thriving coral reefs. He further highlighted new developments in the destination, including the addition of four new golf courses over the next two years.

The hotel landscape is also expanding with over 700 new rooms and a US$700-million investment.

Notable openings include the Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, which is now welcoming guests after its conversion from Tropicana Inn in San Jose del Cabo. The boutique 70-room property underwent a complete renovation, expanding the number of rooms, adding a pool and jacuzzi, incorporating a wellness centre and enhancing the food and beverage offerings on property – all while retaining its charm and scale.

Additions this year will include Soho House Los Cabos, St. Regis Los Cabos at Quivira, and Park Hyatt Los Cabos at Cabo del Sol. The Grand Hyatt and Amanvari are anticipated for 2026.

Focusing on quality over quantity, Los Cabos aims to enhance its impressive luxury appeal.

Culinary experiences are also evolving with the arrival of the first MICHELIN guide for Mexico in 2024.

Meanwhile, other new food-focussed experiences are popping up, offering exclusive gastronomic adventures.

Set on a stunning 6-hectare desert property, Monte Cardon is a refined destination featuring an open air 12-seat restaurant catering to exclusive experiences as well as special events and weddings. Among its signature experiences is a four-hour hands-on cooking class that emphasizes local, seasonal ingredients and a “slow food” philosophy.

Adventurous travellers will find a new retreat at Amet Nature Retreat, set on the Santiago estuary’s shores. The unique property offers well-being activities and organic culinary experiences led by Chef Casiano Reyes.

Other new food experiences include the launch of Delphine Bay Club at the Four Seasons Costa Palmas, Materia Pastry Boutique in San José del Cabo, Speakeasy in Chileno Bay, Alma Bar in Esperanza at Auberge Resorts.
