LISTENING IN: Turning Christmas up to 11

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra has become as much a part of Christmas as Frosty or The Grinch, ever since its landmark album “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” album debuted over 25 years ago. The collection of Christmas-themed “rock operas” included this week’s offering, the epic instrumental “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo,” which cleverly incorporates echoes of a familiar Christmas tune.

Following in the footsteps of Mannheim Steamroller, the American band has also become a concert staple, with shows legendary for lasers, pyrotechnics, and other audio and visual aids, making for an always sold-out seasonal engagement, like a rock and roll Nutcracker.

The band/orchestra does have another side, which embraces the less-raucous spirit of the holidays, using tasteful sets and song arrangements, string sections, and sometimes even children’s choirs.

But this year we definitely feel like turning up the Christmas volume to 11.
