It’s been over 40 years since the heyday of Triumph, but the great Canadian band is still revered, garnering virtually every honorific possible in this country, and now again in the news thanks to the upcoming release (in June) of a tribute album featuring the likes of band devotees Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Ann Wilson (Heart), Larry Gowan, (Styx), and Sebastian Bach (Skid Row).
The influential Toronto power trio – Rik Emmett, Mike Levine and Gil Moore – delivered a slew of memorable hits from 1979 into the ‘80s, including the likes of “Lay it on the Line,” “Hold On,” “Somebody’s Out There,” and, of course, “Magic Power,” which was tapped for the title of the tribute effort.
Available videos of the band from the ‘80s aren’t great, so we’ll go with something a little more recent – just Emmett without his original bandmates – but it nevertheless once again “all comes crystal clear,” just how Triumph had the power of the music that makes things better than they seem.
Lyrics
Something’s at the edge of your mind
You don’t know what it is
Something you were hoping to find
But you’re not sure what it is
Then you hear the music
And it all comes crystal clear
The music does the talking
Says the things you want to hear
I’m young, I’m wild and I’m free
Got the magic power of the music in me
I’m young, I’m wild and I’m free
Got the magic power of the music in me
She climbs into bed
She pulls the covers overhead
And she turns her little radio on
She’s had a rotten day
So, she hopes the DJ’s
Gonna play her favourite song
Makes her feel much better
Brings her closer to her dreams
A little magic power
Makes it better that it seems
