LISTENING IN: Symphonic Scorpions rocking like a hurricane

With apologies to Kraftwerk and Trio (remember the classic “Da Da Da”?), The Scorpions are Germany’s greatest contribution to the rock music canon. Still going strong, the band formed in 1965 but hit its commercial peak in the ‘80s with a series of power ballads that helped define the niche, such as “Winds of Change” (about the political transformation of Russia) and “Still Lovin’ You.”

In a bid to evolve from the dated hair-band era, the band offered up unplugged performances – dubbed acoustic metal – and even notably collaborated with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 2000, serving up an interesting classical twist on their metal roots.

With a nod to today’s top story on the forecast for the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season, here’s an offering from those symphonic sessions (which resulted in a 10-song album called “Moment of Glory”) that serves up a terrific new version of the 1984 classic “Rock You Like a Hurricane.”
