By Michael Baginski/ Mick Jagger has certainly had his fair share of amazing duet partners, including the likes of Tina Turner, David Bowie and Lady Gaga. Not to be outdone, the second most famous Rolling Stone paired up with the incomparable jazz-pop singer Norah Jones to register his own claim on the well-known ballad “Love Hurts.”
Of course, Keith Richards is known for his guitar licks, not his crooning, but nevertheless steps up with an unexpected vocal performance that is both touching and surprisingly tender – and a far cry from the most popular rendition of the 1960 Everly Brothers song, which was a hit (including No. 1 in Canada) for Scottish rockers Nazareth in 1976 – rendered as an unlikely power ballad.
This performance returns to the song’s introspective roots with Richards and the sublime Jones channelling another acclaimed version of the song by country-rock legend Gram Parsons paired with Emmylou Harris.
And it stands as one of the best.
Lyrics
Love hurts, love scars, love wounds
And marks, any heart
Not tough or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts…… ooh, ooh love hurts
I’m young, I know, but even so
I know a thing or two
I learned from you
I really learned a lot, really learned a lot
Love is like a flame
It burns you when it’s hot
Love hurts…… ooh, ooh love hurts
Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves I guess
They’re not foolin’ me
I know it isn’t true, I know it isn’t true
Love is just a lie
Made to make you blue
Love hurts…… ooh, ooh love hurts
Ooh, ooh love hurts
I know it isn’t true, I know it isn’t true
Love is just a lie
Made to make you blue
Love hurts…… ooh, ooh love hurts
Ooh, ooh love hurts
