LISTENING IN: My, my, my, it’s Tom Jones

By MICHAEL BAGINSKI/ From The Cult last week to Tom Jones this, don’t say we’re not versatile. At any rate, what were you doing on April 21, 1968? I don’t know either (I was alive), but we know that the hunky Welsh crooner was performing on the Ed Sullivan show.

Jones – real name Thomas Jones Woodward (Sir Thomas, to you) – has sold over 100 million records during his distinguished career, which included regularly performing in Las Vegas and, fun fact, a TV variety show recorded in Vancouver in 1980 and 1981.

Still looking sharp at age 86 and making appearances on British TV, Jones is known for his robust baritone and is synonymous with such all-time classics as “It’s Not Unusual,” “What’s New Pussycat,” “She’s a Lady,” and today’s offering, “Delilah.”

Put your hand up if you’ve sung that one at karaoke. For the few who haven’t, well, click the link and sing it now!

Lyrics

I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window
I saw the flickering shadow of love on her blind
She was my woman
As she deceived me I watched and went out of my mind

My, my, my Delilah
Why, why, why Delilah
I could see, that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free

At break of day when that man drove away I was waiting
I crossed the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

My, my, my Delilah
Why, why, why Delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me Delilah I just couldn’t take anymore

She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more

My, my, my Delilah
Why, why, why Delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me Delilah I just couldn’t take anymore
Forgive me Delilah I just couldn’t take anymore
