The Cuba Tourist Board says it is happy to report that it’s business as usual in the country’s tourist areas as the electricity has been restored to 100% of the hotels. The message was confirmed by Sunwing, which stated that its in-destination and hotel partners confirmed that that power has been restored throughout the island as of the evening of Oct. 22.
The tourist board stated: “After the glitch in the national grid occurred on Friday Oct. 18 followed intense days of work around the clock; on Monday Oct. 21 afternoon, the national electric system got connected again and finally by the end of the 22nd the entire grid was successfully stabilized and 100% of the hotels in the main tourist areas got the power back.”
Lessner Gomez, Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Toronto, said, “We have reports, directly from the destination, that the hotels are fully operational across the country, all facilities and services are back to normal, our clients are enjoying their regular tourist activities and it’s business as usual.”
Gomez added that despite some media reports, “The reality is that the majority of the tourist facilities have their own generators and the Ministry of Tourism, local tour operators’ representatives, hotel management and the hotels staff in general made everything possible to minimize the impact.”
All 10 international airports were reported to be carrying out normal operations and well prepared for the upcoming winter season.
The CTB added that tropical storm Oscar didn’t affect any hotels no tourist infrastructure in Holguin as passed through Guantanamo province where there are no major resorts.
Sunwing
Meanwhile, Sunwing, which offers a substantial portfolio of Cuba product thanked travel advisors for their patience during the crisis, and noted that a number of the all-inclusive properties it offers operated on back-up generators and that destinations, including Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Largo and Cayo Coco, were largely unaffected,
Other destinations like Cienfuegos had power restored promptly, and power grid access has since been restored to Holguin, Havana and Varadero.
“Canadians, for decades, have visited Cuba, not only for its pristine beaches and warm weather, but also for the warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people, for its safety and the rich local culture, but is the strong friendships with Cubans what keeps them coming back,” said the tourist board’s Gomez. “So, for this coming winter season I would like to invite Canadians to trust us as we are working very hard to deliver quality service and an elevated holiday experience”.
