15 OCT 2019: Spain's Supreme Court on Monday sentenced 12 prominent former Catalan politicians and activists to lengthy prison terms for their roles in a 2017 bid to gain independence for Catalonia. Within hours, police in riot gear clashed with protesters gathering at Barcelona's airport.  The police used batons to drive back a crowd near the entrance to the subway inside the airport's main terminal. 15 OCT 2019: A large section of a Hard Rock Hotel under construction near New Orleans' historic French Quarter collapsed Saturday amid blinding dust and flying debris, killing two people and injuring more than 20. Rescue workers searched the largely unstable building until nightfall for two people, one of whom has since been found. MORE

15 OCT 2019: A union is calling on cabin crew at German airline Lufthansa to walk off the job for five hours next weekend in a long-running dispute over pay and the union's status. The UFO union said it is urging cabin crew and pursers at Frankfurt and Munich airports, Germany's busiest, to walk out between 6 and 11 a.m. on October 20. MORE

15 OCT 2019: A 67-year-old woman with a history of sneaking onto flights without a ticket will remain jailed after the latest incident in which police say she tried to get past security at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Marilyn Hartman was arrested Friday night and later charged with felony criminal trespass. A judge on Sunday granted her bail but ordered that she stay in custody until a related probation hearing. 15 OCT 2019: California will ban smoking and disposing cigar and cigarette waste on state parks and beaches starting next year under legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Violations of the law will be punishable by a fine of up to $25. Newsom, a Democrat, announced Friday he had signed the bill into law. MORE
