RHIANNON
16 AUG 2019: Earlier this year the Rock and Hall of Fame in Cleveland inducted its class of 2019. For all the worthy recipients, the most notable was certainly Stevie Nicks, who became the first woman to enter the hall twice – this time as a solo act (she was first inducted with her band, Fleetwood Mac, in 1998). So, put your hands together for Ms. Nicks, who channels her inner Welsh witch here in “Rhiannon” from the classic 1997 Mac live performance/album The Dance. MORE

DOWN BY THE HENRY MOORE
09 AUG 2019: Probably the most quintessential song about Toronto, Murray McLauchlan’s ‘Down by the Henry Moore’ was released in 1974 and holds up just as well today. McLauchlan said he wrote it as a sort of travelogue to make people feel good about Toronto. MORE

Stowaway gets in the Spirit
06 AUG 2019: About 30 minutes into a Spirit Airways flight a bat made an appearance in the cabin, flying over the heads of shocked passengers. WHAT NOW
26 JULY 2019: Isn’t that the question? Overwhelming heat waves, melting glaciers, out of control fires, floods, political elections, resignations, unease, anger, fear. With everything that is happening in the world today whether political or environmental or technological or just nonsensical - one can sometimes only look around and wonder ‘What Now?’ MORE

COULD YOU BE LOVED
A Frank Orlando favourite
11 JUL 2019: We thought it appropriate to conclude the week with a music video that was a Frank Orlando favourite. This Bob Marley song was recorded in honour of his 70th Birthday. Typical of Frank, it’s original, upbeat, has something to say, and makes you want to join right in and sing along. MORE

LAND OF DREAMS

We thought it appropriate to remember it now. MORE

LOOKING BACK
What happened to the Trump Shuttle
05 JUL 2019: For a short time in the late 1980's and early 1990's, Donald Trump owned an airline. In 1989, Trump raised US $365 million to purchase the Eastern Shuttle which provided business travellers with quick flights between New York, Boston, and Washington. What happened? Well, it was a good news, bad news situation. MORE

AINT TOO PROUD TO BEG
21 JUN 2019: The Rolling Stones begin shedding some moss again tonight in Chicago with a series of rescheduled North American tour dates following Mick Jagger’s recent heart surgery. And as the band will roll into an open-air venue near Barrie, Ont. for its only Canadian date on June 29, we thought we’d offer up a little teaser with a vintage video of a cover of The Temptations’ classic “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” which the Stones released in 1974. MORE

She helped build houses, taught English, looked after kids at an orphanage, and got to see some of the amazing country as well, including experiencing some of the colourful Zula culture. MORE

LOVE THIS TOWN
24 MAY 2019: With this week’s announcement that the federal government would be investing in Canada’s tourism, and earmarking funds specifically to cities outside of the top three, (Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver) we thought it would be appropriate to share a video from Canadian rock musician and songwriter Joel Plaskett. The song is ‘Love this town,’ and this particular video was filmed in Halifax’s ‘Two if by Sea Cafe.’ VIDEO MORE

SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDERS
Someday sometime spring will show up
03 MAY 2019: Unless today is any different – it’s too early to tell right now – this has been a decidedly miserable, cold, wet, wintery week (in Toronto). We even had snow – on April 30! So, in the absence of signs of spring - though I did see a guy (coat, scarf, gloves, hat and one glove ) on a patio (of course the gloveless hand held a cigarette) - here’s John Denver with something we can all look forward to. More than just about a place
22 MAR 2019: While ‘Walking in Memphis’, composed and recorded by American singer-songwriter Marc Cohn, reached number 13 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100’ way back in 1991, I only heard it recently (thank you Mike Baginski) and loved it. Cohn has said the song is "100 percent autobiographical”, describing it as a pretty literal transcription of a visit he made in 1986. MORE
