In honour of National Grandparents Day this week (Sept. 7), Outrigger Resorts & Hotels has unveiled ‘The Grandparent Guarantee’ – designed to tap into the “skip-gen travel” – a niche the company says “has moved from niche to the mainstream in recent years.”
With The Grandparent Guarantee, OUTRIGGER says it is making a heartfelt promise: “Guests travelling across generations will leave Hawai’i with deeper connections and memories to last a lifetime – and if not, the premier beach resort brand will invite them back for another stay, on the house.”
The pledge simply says that during a grandparent-grandchild stay, “If the connections between generations aren’t meaningfully strengthened,” guests may simply call the OUTRIGGER Call Centre to be credited for a future stay, thereby ensuring “every stay provides a setting where family bonds can deepen across generations – guaranteed.”
Citing data from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Outrigger notes that roughly a third of grandparents have already taken a skip-gen trip, with the Family Travel Association adding that grandma and grandpa are often the ones both footing the bill and curating vacation experiences for their loved ones.
Ski-gen travel, Outrigger maintains, is a variation/subset of multi-gen travel, itself among the world’s top global travel trends.
With its Hawaiian roots, Outrigger says its Grandparent pledge further celebrates kūpuna (elders) and the timeless tradition of strengthening familial bonds, while also recognizing that Hawai’i consistently ranks among the top family travel destinations in the U.S., “making it a natural stage for these meaningful journeys.” The Grandparent Guarantee honors that legacy while embracing a travel trend that is redefining how families choose to spend time together today.
How It works
- Book a stay: Reserve a minimum of four nights in a suite or multi-room accommodation at any OUTRIGGER Resort or Hotel in Hawai’i (O’ahu, Maui, Kaua’i or Hawai’i Island) through Dec. 31
- Bring the little ones: Eligible stays must include at least two generations, with one grandparent and one grandchild travelling together
- Travel window: Valid for stays until May 31, 2026, when booked directly at OUTRIGGER.com or by calling 1-866-256-8461
- Promise: If the connections between generations aren’t meaningfully strengthened, guests may simply call the OUTRIGGER Call Centre to be credited for a future stay, subject to applicable terms and conditions
Outrigger points out at that its hotels, there are countless opportunities for kūpuna and keiki (children) to bond, from lei-making or hula lessons that honour Hawaiian traditions, to catamaran and snorkeling tours, lūʻaus and world-class entertainment, such as ‘Auana by Cirque du Soleil at OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Beachcomber Hotel.
Additionally, accommodation options include rooms with multiple bedrooms, expansive living areas, full kitchens and private lanais overlooking the Pacific.
To be eligible for the Grandparent Guarantee, travellers must book and stay a minimum four-night stay in a suite or multi-room accommodation at any OUTRIGGER Resort or Hotel in Hawai’i (O’ahu, Maui, Kaua’i Hawai’i Island).
