FIRST DOMINO TO FALL? Porter reduces fuel surcharge

With fuel prices dropping in the wake of an apparent agreement between the U.S. and Iran to end the war in the Middle East, Porter Airlines says it is reducing its temporary surcharge for new reward flight bookings to $20.

The carrier introduced a temporary fuel surcharge of $40 in March for VIPorter reward flight redemptions to offset global aviation fuel prices that had doubled.

In an email notice to loyalty members on Tuesday, Porter stated, “We also said that our goal was to remove this surcharge when the price of fuel reaches levels seen at the beginning of this year. Today, we are taking a step in this direction.”

The carrier says that halving the surcharge reflects that fuel prices remain approximately 50% above last year and that it will make further adjustments as conditions change.

Consumers and travel advisors will certainly be hoping other carriers will follow suit.
