Canadian visits to the U.S. are continuing to climb, rising in June for the third straight month year over year, according to Statistics Canada. Canadian-resident return trips from the United States totalled 1.7 million – an increase of 3.2% from the same month in 2025.
The rise was driven by a 5.2% increase in return trips from the United States by automobile in June 2026. However, return trips from the U.S. by air in June decreased 3.8% from June 2025.
At same time, the increase in June was still down 28.7% (by car -29.6% and by air -5.0% compared to the same months in 2024.
Meanwhile, the number of arrivals to Canada by US residents increased 5.1% in June 2026 from the same month in 2025. Arrivals by automobile increased 7.6% while arrivals by air decreased 0.3%.
Taken together, the preliminary number of international arrivals to Canada (Canadian-resident return trips, combined with US-resident and overseas-resident arrivals) by air and automobile totalled 5.5 million, up 3.6% from the same month in 2025.
Overseas travel
As Canadian travel south of the border increased, return trips by residents from overseas countries held steady, with 873,200 travellers in returning by air in June slight decrease (-0.4%) from the same month one year earlier.
The highest number of return trips from abroad by Canadian residents (138,500) was observed on Sunday, June 28.
Overseas-resident trips to Canada were up 5.1% in June from the same month one year earlier. More overseas residents arrived in Canada by air (620,800; +5.8% year over year) than by automobile (53,500; -2.0% year over year) in June.
World Cup
Canadian host cities Vancouver and Toronto were home to 13 FIFA World Cup matches from June 11 to July 19. In June, teams from 15 overseas countries played in these matches. Total air arrivals from these 15 countries was up 32.5% (+29,500) in June compared with June 2025.
Notably, air arrivals by Australian residents peaked on June 12, ahead of their World Cup match in Vancouver, while air arrivals by residents of Panama peaked on June 16, the day before their match in Toronto. Air arrivals by German residents peaked on June 19, before their World Cup match in Toronto on June 20.
