CANADA COMPASS: Yearning for Yellowknife

Citing growing interest in travel to the North, the Government of the Northwest Territories reported an increase in annual passenger traffic at Yellowknife Airport for 2025 when compared to the previous year.

There were 618,177 passengers last year, up from 604,330 in 2024, according to a news release from the Department of Infrastructure.

The GNWT said increased regional travel, expanded airline routes, increased flight frequency and renewed interest in tourism and business were the driving factors behind the modest rise in passenger traffic.

“These statistics reflect the continued strength of air travel in the Northwest Territories and the airport’s role as a vital hub for Northern connectivity,” stated Infrastructure Minister Vince McKay.

The Yellowknife Airport plans to invest in infrastructure and services in order to meet future demands and enhance the passenger experience, the news release indicated.

“Passenger growth at YZF reflects the growing interest in the North – from tourism and business travel to the national conversations on the numerous projects and innovations underway as well as the potential for investment,” said McKay. “It underscores the importance of safe, reliable air service for residents, businesses and visitors alike, and plays a vital role in keeping our communities connected while supporting economic activity across the territory.”
