AIR CANADA SOUTHERN FLIGHTS OPERATING NORMALLY: Flexible change policy offered over Venezuela fears

While stating on its web site that its flights to the Caribbean and South America are operating “normally,” Air Canada has instituted a limited time allowance for passengers worried about flying to the region to change their plans for free following the U.S.’s military action in Venezuela.

“Because of the situation in Venezuela and surrounding regions, we understand that you may want to make alternate travel arrangements,” the airline stated.

Hundreds of international flights had been cancelled in the eastern Caribbean on Saturday – most notably Puerto Rico and Aruba – after the U.S. incursion, which saw Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro captured and flown with his wife to the US, but transportation secretary Sean Duffy said flight restrictions would end Sunday morning.

The Air Canada policy applies to close to 20 destinations in the region and applies to tickets purchased no later than Jan. 2 for travel through Jan. 6. New flights must take place by Jan. 13 in the same cabin and are subject to availability. Outside that window, new fares apply.

Destinations include:

  • Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda (ANU)
  • Aruba, Aruba (AUA)
  • Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI)
  • Curaçao, Curaçao (CUR)
  • Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (POS)
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
  • Lucia, Saint Lucia (UVF)
  • Maarten, Sint Maarten (SXM)
  • Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (STT)
  • Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadaloupe (PTP)
  • Fort-de-France, Martinique (FDF)
  • Grenada, Grenada (GND)
  • Vincent, St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVD)
  • Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis (SKB)
  • Bogotá, Colombia (BOG)

Clients booked through Air Canada Vacations are advised to reach out to the tour company directly.

Both the airline and ACV say they will advise clients if the situation changes.
