Modernization of Inuvik’s Mike Zubko Airport will begin this fall, says Transport Canada.
According to a news release from the Government of Canada, upgrades to the Inuvik Airport will be the first investment through the Arctic Infrastructure Fund (AIF).
The AIF is a $1-billion fund created as part of Budget 2025. It is intended to fund dual-use infrastructure projects in Canada’s Arctic regions, meaning projects that support both civilian and military use, such as airports, highways, ports, railways and digital infrastructure projects.
The Inuvik Airport will receive $49.5 million from the AIF, in addition to the previously announced $230-million investment from Canada’s Department of National Defence to extend the airport’s runway.
The Transport Canada announcement states that the proposed upgrades to the airport will “strengthen Canada’s presence in the North.”
NWT MP and Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty says investments like this are essential to meet the growing demand placed on Northern infrastructure.
“Northern airports are critical gateways that connect communities, support economic development, and strengthen Canada’s presence in the Arctic,” Alty stated.
