PEEP SHOW: Quebec road-trip routes for prime fall foliage

Leaf-peeping season is on the horizon as Québec’s scenic landscapes burst into brilliant colour with the changing foliage. Whether travelling on two wheels or four, the province’s dedicated touristic routes are a great way to explore the region throughout September and October as the autumn leaves turn.

Here are three popular routes:

  • Route de la Beauce: Lush landscapes and agro-tourism experiences abound along this route that criss-crosses for 117 kilometres along Rivière Chaudière. The guided route takes travellers off the beaten path to explore the region’s great outdoors and historic sites, with stops at parks and museums along the way. Don’t miss a sweet stop at Maison J.A. Vachon to sample Québec’s famous Joe Louis cakes, produced by the Vachon family.
  • Route des Montagnes: The hilly Route des Montagnes in the Charlevoix region is ideal for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The 121-kilometre itinerary explores the Laurentian foothills and two of Québec’s most scenic national parks: Grands-Jardins and Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie, which dazzle with bright colours during the autumn months. Along the guided route, boat excursions are a picturesque option for those who want to take in nature’s beauty from a different perspective.
  • Route des Sommets: Dotted with mountains, rivers and beautiful villages, this 193-kilometre circuit explores the highest mountains in Québec’s Eastern Townships, offering a birds-eye view of the autumnal leaf canopy below. A highlight along the route is Parc national du Mont-Mégantic, where visitors can see wild animals like white-tailed deer and moose, and go stargazing at the ASTROLAB astronomy discovery centre astronomy discovery centre.
