READY FOR SOME SUNSHINE: DR lays out the welcome mat

By JEN SAVEDRA/ 2026 is proving to be an exceptional year for the Dominican Republic, with official data showing that an amazing 1.22 million visitors arrived in January alone. This “unprecedented surge” represents an 8.7% increase over the previous year, and a 61% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.

With Cuba and Mexico having difficulties that have impacted the tourism numbers, the Dominican Republic – long a favourite with Canadians is being viewed even more favourably than usual with thanks to its value and safety. In fact, Canadian tourism is surging in early 2026, following a banner year in 2025 which saw over 1.14 million visitors attracted by new luxury resorts and increased flights.

Punta Cana continues to account for nearly 70% of all international arrivals. The region’s “high-density resort model” is proving to be its greatest strength in 2026, as competition between all-inclusive properties keeps prices low and quality high for the average family.

And making things even easier for Canadian travellers, until Dec. 31, 2026, the Dominican Republic is allowing Canadians to enter with a passport valid only for the duration of their stay, rather than the standard six-month validity rule.
