This is a tricky time for travel and tourism – that has to be acknowledged. Some of our holiday favourites are, for various and differing reasons, less appealing than usual. But, we do still want to travel, and right now, think about it, Australia is a very viable choice of destination. And really, It’s already popular with Canadians.
Last year a total of 171,652 Canadians visited Australia – 22,985 in December alone (13 % over the previous year).
Getting there is not an issue. With daily non-stop flights out of Vancouver on Air Canada and Qantas, and additional flights on Air New Zealand and Fiji Airways. There are of course numerous gateways to Australia via the US should one wish to choose that option. Certainly there is no shortage of lift available.
In Toronto last week, Penny Fowler, Chair of Tourism Australia acknowledged that Canada is an important market, saying, “Canadian travellers are adventurous, curious and increasingly seeking meaningful, high quality experiences – qualities that align strongly with what Australia offers. Together we have an opportunity to deepen these connections and build on the strong foundations already established here.”
Fowler was accompanied by Tourism Australia’s new Managing Director Robin Mack, and Vice President, The Americas and New Zealand, Chris Allison. She acknowledged Consul General and Trade Investment Commissioner, Shelly Jackson along with Canadian partners Susan Webb and her team at VoX International who represent Tourism Australia in the critical trade market, and Lexi Pathak and the team at Faulhaber for their public relations and communications activity. Fowler also gave a shout-out to Bruce Hodge, President and Founder of Goway Travel, who has been at the forefront of sending Canadians to Australia for decades.
“Tourism represents holidays and unforgettable experiences,” said Fowler, “but its impact extends far beyond that.”
Today, tourism in Australia supports over 360,000 businesses, employs nearly 700,000 Australians, contributes close to 3% of Australia’s total GDP, and strengthens regional communities with 2.4 million international visitors travelling beyond its capital cities and the Gold Coast as of September 2025. The average length of stay for Canadians is 31 nights.
Canada and Australia share a deep appreciation for open landscapes, diverse cultures, and the power to bring people together, said Fowler.
“With that shared appreciation comes great opportunity to continue to position Australia as a world-leading destination of choice for the Canadian traveller.”
As a Canadian with more “rellies” in Australia than I can count, I may be a tiny bit biased, but I can say unequivocally that it is an amazing country offering everything from vibrant cities, fabulous beaches, gorgeous landscapes, incredibly friendly people and let’s not forget Australian wine. If Vegemite is not for you … well … it’s an acquired taste.
