ALL QUIET IN QUINTANA ROO: Mexican tourism hub reports business as usual

After the recent disruption to life and travel in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara following the takedown of a prominent cartel leader on the Pacific side of the country, the Mexican state of Quintana says it’s strictly business as usual on its Caribbean beaches and at its resorts.

Home to the tourism mecca Cancun, as well as Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, and Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo encompasses the Riviera Maya and the Costa Maya, known for their beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and Mayan archaeological sites.

During the last week of February, the state’s government says Quintana Roo registered as many as nearly 5,000 air operations took pace in its four international airports, while average hotel occupancy of 85.4% and an approximate influx of 574,700 tourists, reflecting the confidence of national and international travellers.

Moreover, the state’s 12 tourist destinations operated without interruptions, with airports, ports, cruise terminals, transportation services, hotel zones, public beaches and tourist attractions operating on a regular basis.

Likewise, the arrival of 55 cruise ships through the ports of Mahahual and Cozumel was registered, with an estimated influx of 146,300 cruise passengers.

During the week, the beaches and main tourist areas showed a large influx of visitors enjoying the destination, says the government, which canvassed tourists across the region.

Renée Boisvert, VP, Tour Operator Products & Sales at Transat, stated: “We are pleased to see that local authorities confirm the smooth running of tourist activities in the region. This is also what we are hearing from our hotel partners on the ground: operations are continuing as usual, and travellers are fully enjoying their stay. Clients can therefore plan their trip to the State of Quintana Roo with complete peace of mind.”

The state government adds that it maintains “permanent coordination with federal and municipal authorities and the tourism sector to guarantee an orderly, safe and efficient operation during the high season, strengthening the visitor experience and shared prosperity for the people of Quintana Roo.”
