RAIN RAIN GO AWAY: YVR has wettest year since 1912

Skeptics who think that Vancouverites exaggerate just how much rain the city gets as a means of discouraging others from moving there take note: Several rainfall records were shattered in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley in British Columbia last week, with the Vancouver International Airport smashing its record from over a century ago.

Environment Canada says about 43.2 millimetres of rain fell on late Thursday evening and Friday at Vancouver International Airport, which has doubled the previous 26.9 mm of rainfall record set in 1912.

The weather agency says an unseasonably moisture-laden frontal system brought “much-needed” rain to the south coast regions from Thursday through Friday.

Abbotsford saw 55.8 mm of rainfall, breaking its previous record in 1999, while West Vancouver received 80.6 mm of rainfall, compared to about 38.4 mm of rain in 1999.

Meanwhile, in Metro Vancouver, the city of Coquitlam has received the most amount of rain with 95.4 mm being recorded, while Port Mellon in Howe Sound received the highest amount across B.C., with at least 123 mm being recorded.
