LISTENING IN: A song for the times then and now

By Michael Baginski/ It’s remembered as the epic coming together of two of the world’s greatest rock bands, The Beatles and Queen. But the momentous jam by Paul, Ringo, Brian May and Roger Taylor – notably aided by a who’s who of musical friends, with a full orchestra, for the rendition of “All You Need is Love” – was so much more.

On a musical level, consider Rod Stewart and Joe Cocker joining McCartney on lead vocals; Eric Clapton on guitar; Brian Wilson, keyboards. Bryan Adams was there; even Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Bennett side by side; plus many others from all walks of music – all gathered together for the finale of the ‘Party At The Palace’ concert in London to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

Yet, the additional context for the June 4, 2002, concert, which was seen by 12,000 people at Buckingham Palace but another 200 million around the world, would clearly have been the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the looming war in Iraq in 2003 – the song delivering a plea for peace, love, and togetherness in the world (as was also intended when written by John Lennon in 1967).

Yet it’s a timeless message that is surely every bit as relevant, and needed, today as our increasingly angry world is once again is seemingly coming apart at the seams.

Paul, Ringo, Brian, and Roger are still with us. And there’s a new monarch in the U.K. So, again? Please!

Lyrics

Love, love, love.
Love, love, love.
Love, love, love.

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done.
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game.
It’s easy.

Nothing you can make that can’t be made.
No one you can save that can’t be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time.
It’s easy.

All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

Nothing you can know that isn’t known.
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.
It’s easy.

All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

All you need is love (all together, now!)
All you need is love. (everybody!)
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need (love is all you need).
