Record-breaking heat waves in 2024 – including three of the hottest days on record globally, according to NASA – are fueling the rise “cool-cations” – trips to cooler, climate-resilient destinations during off-peak seasons that offer relief from extreme weather and crowded hotspots – amongst Canadians this year, according to Flight Centre Canada (FCC).
According to a recent YouGov survey commissioned by Flight Centre, more than half of Canadians (54%) are concerned about travel disruptions, while 41% worry about severe weather when choosing destinations.
And the concerns are not unfounded. The YouGov data highlights the widespread impact of weather-related disruptions:
- Eight in 10 Canadians (82%) experienced a travel disruption in the past year.
- One in three (34%) who faced disruptions reported a flight cancellation due to severe weather, and,
- One in ten (10%) encountered accommodation issues tied to these disruptions.
As Canadians become more mindful of climate and travel-related challenges, they are increasingly gravitating toward destinations that combine natural beauty, cooler climates, and climate resilience, according to the survey. These “cool-cation” destinations are not only an escape from heat and overcrowding, but a way to explore unique off-peak locales with peace of mind.

“‘Cool-Cations’ address a growing need for climate-conscious and comfortable travel,” says Chadd Andre, Executive VP at Flight Centre Canada. “Canadians are drawn to destinations with temperate climates, natural resilience, and opportunities to avoid heat, overcrowding, and weather-related disruptions.”
The trend reflects the rising popularity of off-peak travel. Canadians are booking earlier –particularly for Europe in spring 2025 – to enjoy affordability, smaller crowds, and milder weather. Off-peak travel also minimizes exposure to extreme weather risks – such as hurricanes or wildfires – generating greater peace of mind.
Further, Flight Centre says, cool-cations are about more than just escaping the heat – they represent a growing awareness of climate resilience and adaptability.
“By choosing temperate destinations, travelling in the off-season, and planning ahead with travel insurance, Canadians can enjoy more fulfilling and worry-free vacations,” says FCC.
