LISTENING IN: For the love of Streetheart

Kenny Shields of Streetheart

One of the great Canadian band of the classic rock era, Saskatchewan’s Streetheart scored several hits in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, including covers of Them/Van Morrison’s “Here Comes the Night” and “Under My Thumb,” which in my humble estimation improved on the Stones’ original. My favourite, however, was/still is “What Kind of Love Is This?,” arguably their most memorable hit.

And that’s the one that remaining band members chose to play at the memorial for beloved lead singer Kenny Shields, who died in 2017 at age 69 due to a heart ailment.

Forgive the video’s telethon framing, this poignant version with Shields, shortly before his death – delicately interpreted with piano and violin rather than electric guitar – reminds us why we love Streetheart – and for a moment, it makes us feel better.

Lyrics

I don’t hear a word, I don’t hear a thing
I need something to make me feel better
I’ve tried her at home
I’ve tried on the phone
But somehow I can’t seem to get her

I’m waiting in line, I’m wasting my time
Again and again
I keep hoping there’s love in her eyes
What kind of love is this?
Kind that keeps me standing in line
What kind of love is this?

What can’t it be that when she needed me
Are memories so hard to recover?
I’m nobody’s fool
She’s mean when she’s cruel
She’s saving herself for another

I’m waiting in line, I’m wasting my time
Again and again

I keep hoping there’s love in her eyes
What kind of love is this?
Kind that keeps me standing in line
What kind of love is this?

What kind of love is this?
Kind that keeps me standing in line
What kind of love is this?

What kind of love is this?
Kind that keeps me standing in line
What kind of love is this?

I don’t hear a word
I don’t hear a thing
I need something to make me feel better
