NO REVIEW FOR YOU: ACTA ‘disappointed’ at lack of progress on travel industry review

ACTA president Wendy Paradis

ACTA says it disappointed by the lack of progress demonstrated at Tuesday’s Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) annual general meeting on Recommendation 16 of the provincial auditor general’s report, which recommended a comprehensive review of the Travel Industry Act, 2002 and its associated regulations to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the regulatory system in Ontario.

Nearly and year has passed since the publication of the AG’s “Value for Money” report, and the association says that following an initial meeting with Ontario ministry staff in December 2023, it has received no further updates – despite repeated inquiries.

ACTA is urging the provincial government to prioritize the review and provide a clear timeline for its implementation, stating, “aligning the regulatory framework with the evolving needs of both the industry and consumers is paramount.”

“We call on the Ontario government to engage in open dialogue and take prompt action to address this pressing issue,” ACTA president Wendy Paradis says. “The continued growth and success of Ontario’s travel industry depend on modernizing our regulatory framework.”

She adds that the review is vital for Ontario travel agencies and independent travel advisors as it would foster a more productive and innovative economy while supporting jobs throughout the province.

“We are committed to collaborating with the government on this crucial initiative,” says Paradis. “Our members possess extensive expertise and insights that could significantly contribute to developing an efficient and effective regulatory framework.”

Prior to the TICO AGM, the Canadian Association of Tour Operators had similarly urged that a “concrete plan” be adopted for regulatory reform for the travel industry in the province.

“We ask the government to act on its commitment to conduct a comprehensive review of the Travel Industry Act, 2002 and its regulation, and take decisive action to implement the auditor general’s recommendations,” said Jean Hébert, Executive Director of CATO.

He added, “We cannot afford to delay any longer. The travel industry is facing unprecedented challenges, and a modernized regulatory framework is crucial for its future success.”
