11 DEC 2017: It was a night at the gallery like no other. The Art Gallery of Ontario was the select setting for the Mexico Tourism Board, Pro Mexico and Aeromexico to say Gracias to local travel professionals last week.

Guillermo Del Toro: At Home with Monsters

During the final weeks of the hit exhibition, "Guillermo Del Toro: At Home with Monsters," guests enjoyed a private guided tour of the Mexican filmmaker's freaky collection of art, curios, and film props which included items to Del Toro's films: Hellboy and Crimson Peak.


However, before the gallery tours, Michele Martinson, regional sales director in Canada for Aeromexico, acknowledged the contribution of those travel professionals who helped make Aeromexico finish a successful year.

Guests heard how the airline which has been in the Canadian market for nearly six years now provides air service in four gateways: Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and the latest in Calgary.

"We carried a little over 270,000 Canadian passengers," she noted about last year's overall bookings and indicated a 34 percent growth is expected this year which will continue in 2018 with "even more."

Martinson acknowledged the growth can be attributed to the industry partnerships among its suppliers and agencies which have allowed Aeromexico to grow. "Certainly it hasn't been any easy feat but it has been an accomplishment that we are very proud of," she said.

Cesar Mendoza, the director in Canada for the Mexico Tourism Board, also thanked guests from the tourism industry for their great work. Mendoza relayed how this year was exceptional in overall Canadian visitor arrivals compared to previous years.

"We are expecting almost a 12 percent growth in the number of Canadians travelling to Mexico which for the last five years it was something that was not seen," he told Travel Industry Today.

The new director who has been at the helm since March attributes the uptick in Canadian bookings to several factors, one of which includes the lifting of a contentious visa requirement for Mexican travellers by the Federal Government.

"By doing that (lifting) more airlines decided to put more seats between Mexico and Canada," he said.

Mexico's $$ appeal

The valuation of the Canadian dollar versus the US dollar which is comparably 30 percent higher means the Canadian spending power, noted Mendoza, is better when Canadian travellers decide to spend money in Mexico. "Their money is going to work more for them when going to Mexico than going to the United States or other places."

More Seats

More seats mean more service, more routes and more lift.

"The competition is good," he noted of the various carriers that now offer direct service to Mexico's largest hub, Mexico City known for its 30 connecting gateways within Mexico. Among Canadian carriers, Air Canada offers direct service from Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver to Mexico City. In 2018, WestJet will start nonstop year-round service to Mexico City from Calgary and Vancouver.

Meanwhile, the Mexican airline Interjet started operations in Canada this past summer with nonstop service to Mexico City and Cancun from Toronto as well as service from Montreal and Vancouver.
