Pam Stellini is an original. Her quirky outlook and wry humour defy categorization. Readers have compared her to Erma Bombeck and Art Buchwald with a travel spin – and we’re not about to argue. TIP THE SCALESIts the weigh to go
21 MAY 2013: We like knowing that airlines have strict regulations to adhere to. Glad to know someone is measuring aircraft weight and centres of gravity. As long as folks are following a formula to determine the weight of a plane, its fuel and cargo, it’s all good to us. But when an airline puts a weigh scale in front of a passenger? Well, all of a sudden our weight becomes personal.
PILOT PROJECTEyes wide shut
07 MAY 2013: There are two pilots with Air India who are good at their job, so good in fact that they could do it with their eyes closed. And they did. And they would have got away with it, were it not for some squealing do-gooder who reported it to airline management.
TAKING A POT SHOTOurs is smaller than yours
23 APR 2013: Good things come in small packages but two towns on different continents want their packages get massive world recognition. ‘Britain’s smallest park’ is aiming to be recognized as the ‘world’s smallest park’ but a little plot in the US is a bit of a thorn in its side.
TRAFFIC WHOACalling 911
09 APR 2013: The police pulled the vehicle over, spoke to the driver and noticed all the high end amenities, fitting for the business executive occupying the back seat. Except it wasn’t a limousine; it was an ambulance refitted as one. This is how the Russian fat cats navigate the Moscow gridlock; with a paid driver in a medical emergency vehicle.
YOUR MOM CALLEDGovernment wants you to call back
26 MAR 2013: I used to be a coach class worrier. When I became a mom I upgraded to first class, so I have some sympathy for a mother whose son was travelling with his girlfriend in Peru. It seems that the woman hadn’t heard from the young couple in a month and took swift action, calling on the government to locate the boy and tell him to call his mom.
THE I IN VIPStands for inconvenienced
12 MAR 2013: “Win a flight for two to Germany but find your way to the Netherlands for your free hotel room and then get yourself to Belgium the next day to attend part of the Grand Prix (the first part).” It begs the question, who gets that - the winner or the loser? Sadly it is what the winner 'won' in a Red Bull “VIP trip of a lifetime to the Belgian Grand Prix.”
TAXI TAXIHail no
26 FEB 2013: Two people are in San Francisco, both needing a ride to Fisherman’s Wharf and neither is carrying cash. Who do you think will get to Pier 39 first; the one who calls for a taxi or the one who calls a stranger? A few start-up companies would argue that the person who calls a stranger will; providing they use a ride sharing app on their smart phone. And they’ll pay less.
HEY CHICAGORight back at you
12 FEB 2013: Last week the Chicago Tribune’s editorial hailed the assets of Canada; commending our banking system, real estate market and healthy loonie. Our exports to the states were also acknowledged with poutine being described as an import that commands attention from the land of “moose and maples.”
GUIDING LIGHTShowing them a good time
05 FEB 2013: Oivind Fure tour director for Globus family of brands was recently in Ontario presenting at a consumer show. A couple in the audience looked familiar to him. Mr and Mrs Kelly recognized Fure immediately; he was their tour guide on a Scandinavian Globus tour a decade ago. They connected after the presentation and their reunion went beyond a handshake and pleasantries, with the Kelly’s inviting Fure to their home for coffee.
VACATION VALUEStill the ultimate travel show
30 JAN 2013: It was the good, the bad and the ugly, although the ugly weather had just subsided in time for The Ultimate Travel Show last weekend. It was a new venue this year and the show offered entertainment, sweepstakes and exceptional exhibitors imparting knowledge and giveaways.
