Anita DraycottQuite aside from being an award winning writer, whose travel articles and photography regularly appear in golf and lifestyle publications and websites, Anita Draycott is a self confessed golf fanatic, who has chased dimpled white balls over five continents. She is also managing editor of GolfStyle, an upscale magazine about “life as it was meant to be played.”
Anita's columns are brought to you by UltimateGolf.ca NEW AND HAPPENINGRiviera Maya Update
02 SEP 2010: What’s new on the Riviera Maya? The shorter answer might be what’s not? Perhaps no other destination on earth has mastered the art of blending conservation and commercialism with such panache. On August 30 at Toronto’s Old Mill & Spa, Orlando Hidalgo presented a very informative seminar. Pass these highlights and tips along to your clients.
GOLF SAFARISCreatures great and small are par for the course
01 SEP 2010: These days as golf courses get more environmentally friendly you’re likely to experience more than birdies and eagles. After chasing dimpled white balls over five continents, I’ve encountered a variety of wildlife on the links from mammoth elks in Banff to docile kangaroos in Australia. I’ve never been attacked, but I was robbed of a tuna sandwich by feisty free-range chickens in Hawaii, and, in Malaysia, a monkey pilfered a package of gum.
TEE TIME AT TREMBLANTThe ultimate way to go
18 AUG 2010: Those smart folks at Ultimate Golf Vacations (who sponsor my column) pioneered the concept of flying skiers from Toronto to Mont-Tremblant about a decade ago. This summer they partnered with Porter Airlines to fly golfers to Tremblant’s fabulous fairways (summer service, June 24 to Sept. 6; winter service Dec. 21 to Apr. 3).
BLING SWINGChip, sip and chill out in Napa North
04 AUG 2010: My friend Margaret and I are both avid golfers and enthusiastic oenophiles. The Okanagan Valley with its 80-plus wineries and string of championship golf courses was a no-brainer when it came to choosing a getaway destination. And now, with the opening of Sparkling Hill Resort, owned by. Gernot Langes-Swarovski, (patriarch of the famed Austrian crystal family), we’d be adding some bling to our swing.
ScotlandA Pilgrimage to the Home of Golf
21 JUL 2010: Watching the British Open this past weekend left me yearning to pack my clubs and take the first plane over to St. Andrews. South African Louis Oosthuizen played brilliantly and his victory was even sweeter because it happened on Nelson Mandela’s 92nd birthday.
ROCK AND ROLLHitting Newfoundland’s Wild and Wonderful Fairways
07 JUL 2010: If your clients are avid Canadian golfers they’ve probably hit the Maritime links in Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, but have they played in Newfoundland? If not, they don’t know what you’re missing. In terms of great golf, things are really rolling on what the locals fondly refer to as “The Rock.” At last count Newfoundland and Labrador boasted about 20 courses, from nine-hole duffer-friendly tracks to 18-hole championship gems that would challenge even a single-digit handicapper. And if you’re looking for the best golfing bargains in the land, the green fees and stay-and-play packages here are (pardon the pun) “Rock bottom.”
ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGHSChicks with sticks head west
23 JUN 2010: Every summer our female foursome, dubbed “chicks with sticks,” heads west for a swinging Rocky Mountain getaway. Women may be latecomers to golf, but we have high standards. A no-frills condo, a fridge full of beer and a Big Mac for dinner are not for us. Along with remarkable golf, we want stylish digs, gourmet meals, massages and martinis. The Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, that legendary Canadian castle in the mountains of Banff National Park, is our unanimous choice.
HAPPY TRAILSPlay six of the best private Carolina courses
09 JUN 2010: Golf Trails aren’t new. The Robert Trent Jones Trail, covering 26 courses in the State of Alabama, has been going since the 1980s. In Canada there are trails from Cape Breton to Muskoka to Whistler. Even Viet Nam recently launched a Ho Chi Minh Golf Trail. But, what makes the new (opened December 2009) McConnell Golf Trail unique is the opportunity to play six of the finest private courses in the Carolinas.
ROCK AND ROLLHitting Ontario cottage country’s premiere designer courses
26 MAY 2010: Ah, cottage country. Just saying it lowers my blood pressure. It conjures up memories of lazy weekends. Dangling my feet off the end of a dock. Skinny dips at midnight. A morning paddle on a lake of glass. Basking on a warm pink granite rock. The call of the loon. And now, golf.
HARD TO BEATGolf, Glitz and Funny Yoga in Los Cabos
12 MAY 2010: Golf is my passion and I’m obviously not alone. Would you believe that more Canucks play golf than ice hockey! According to Golf Canada (Canadian Golf Association) 21% of Canadians are golfers. That’s approximately 6.93 million swingers who play over 77 million rounds of golf a year.
