PRINCESS WATCHES: Situation in Bangkok could get tough

11 MAR 2010:  Princess Cruises is keeping a close eye on the situation in Thailand prior to the Diamond Princess’s turn-around in Laem Chabang on Saturday. The anticipated anti-government demonstrations in Bangkok and other areas of Thailand are expected to be huge and disruptive, and the government has warned foreigners “to be vigilant, particularly in the areas where crowds may gather.”

The cruise line is monitoring the situation and is expected to use transfers or tour routes if necessary to avoid the disruptions.

Thailand’s government has approved the use of the Internal Security Act in areas of Bangkok and some districts of seven provinces that are in close proximity “as a precautionary step to ensure law and order.”

It stressed that foreigner tourists have not been targeted in the political conflict, but cautions them to be aware of their surroundings and crowds.  The government says it “will continue to step up measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all foreigners in Thailand.”
