COVER YOURSELF: Cuba wants visitors to be insured

10 MAR 2010:  Effective May 1, visitors arriving in Cuba must have health insurance, sold either by foreign companies approved by the Cuban government, (no details yet as to who these are) or by Cuban firms at established ports of entry to the country.

The measure applies to Cubans living abroad and returning home for visits, and for foreigners living in the country, but  exempts diplomats and representatives of accredited international organizations.

The decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers last month and has since been published in the Official Gazette.

Neither the cost of the insurance, nor specifics of the coverage required, have yet been disclosed.

Cuba reputedly has a good no-cost healthcare system, which is provided free to its citizens, and very inexpensively to foreigners.

It has been speculated that at least one possible reason for the measure is to boost revenue. Cuba like countries everywhere suffered financially in the global recession

Tourism is one of Cuba's main sources of income. In 2009, 2.42 million people visited the island.

I think everyone traveling should have travel insurance. Why should the host country be responsible for people getting sick or injured while visiting. As far as it being an infringement on tourists this is rubbish. Many tour companies insist on passengers having insurance to go on their tours to ANY destination. Again why should the tour company be responsible for irresponsible travelers.

There was a time when, on arrival at the airport in Havanna, before being allowed to actually enter the country, visitors were obliged to exchange a decreed minimum amount of forein currency into "Castro-dollars". The real trick was that when leaving Cuba anything you had left couldn't be changed back.

Welcome to a communist dictatorship. They do everything on greed, and not thinking of the effects. The reason they are not giving information to travel agents, is because they don't want you to sell it from abroad. They want to spring the visitors with an extra $30 or $40 charge themselves upon arrival! If it so cheap to buy health care there, why would I want insurance for one weeks stay. I'll decide myself. I am young health person. Maybe I have travel insurance on my credit card already, it's my business.

Cubans are wonderful people. This is not a big deal - people should have insurance and agents should be really pushing it. No one sud travel without being protected.

Cuba is a beautiful destination, and the people are wonderful, but I will not spend ONE DOLLAR there ! Tourism dollars support the Communist regime in charge and perpetuates the problem for all citizens !! The sooner we let the regime support itself, hte sooner it will fall !

Medical Insurance for travelling should be mandatory for everyone. The cost is not high. It is cancellation insurance that is expensive. One week medical coverage averages 29.00. Soooooo, one spends $800 - $2000 on a holiday but cheaps out on medical coverage!! Explain that one to me.
