14 SEP 2018: While Canada lost a music icon before his time in Gord Downie in October last year, no less a tragedy has been the decline of John Mann, the Juno award-winning singer, songwriter and actor best known as frontman for Vancouver-based folk-rock band Spirit of the West.

Having beaten cancer in 2011, Mann was diagnosed with early-onsite Alzheimer’s disease in 2014, and while he gamely continued to perform while still able, as chronicled in the heart-rending 2016 documentary “Spirit Unforgettable,” Mann is now permanently sidelined.

SOTW is probably best known for the song “And If Venice is Sinking,” but our favourite is their signature song, “Home for a Rest” an intoxicating (literally) Celtic romp with sentiment to which many a traveller will fondly yet sadly relate.

On occasion of his upcoming 56th birthday on Sept. 18, here’s and cheers to John Mann.
