16 APR 2019: Already rated the top airport in the world for seven years running by Skytrax, Singapore Changi Airport has a new Jewel in its crown. More than a mall, Jewel Changi Airport is a “multi-dimensional tourist destination” that includes a four-storey forest and the world’s largest indoor waterfall.

Such is the anticipation of the opening this week (April 17) that close to half a million Singaporeans were expected to pour out for previews ahead of the official unveiling.

Designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, Jewel features a distinctive dome-shaped facade made of glass and steel, which is destined to become a new landmark in Singapore. At approximately 137,000 sq. m. in size, it offers a range of facilities including airport services, indoor gardens and leisure attractions, retail and dining offerings, and a hotel (Yotel), all under one roof.

The concept for Jewel’s design represents the juxtaposition of a park and marketplace, exemplified by complex’s primary features: the lush Shiseido Forest Valley, including two walking trails, and the majestic 40-metre Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall (with nighttime light show).

The Forest Valley is made up of more than 900 trees and palms and about 60,000 shrubs, comprising one of the largest indoor collection of plants in Singapore, with about 22,000 sq. m. of space dedicated to landscaping throughout the complex, allowing visitors to shop and dine amidst an indoor forest or to take a gentle hike up two cobblestoned walking trails punctuated by cascading waterfalls and mist clouds.

“We wanted to create within Jewel an environment that delivers a sense of discovery and wonder to all our visitors… From the gentle cascading falls to the wisps of mist emitted, these are key elements of the unique Forest Valley experience that we have introduced in Jewel for the enjoyment of all our guests,” says Jewel Changi Airport CEO Hung Jean.

Among the 280 dining and shopping options available at Jewel are the largest Nike store in Southeast Asia, Marks & Spencer, MUJI, ZARA, UNIQLO, Shaw Theatres with IMAX, and FairPrice Finest, with unique features such as exclusive products and specially curated sections and event areas. A food court features over 10 local brands, such as Faai Di by Ka-Soh and Fu Lin Yong Tofu.

Traveller services include an early check-in lounge serving passengers of 26 airlines as well as luggage storage.

As the Jewel continues to develop, summer will see the opening of Canopy Park and a suite of recreational attractions on the top level of the facility, which includes mazes, slides, bouncing sky nets and a canopy bridge.

Jewel is seamlessly integrated with the airport via the Level 1 Arrival Hall in T1, while T2 and T3 are linked via air-conditioned pedestrian linkways.
