01 FEB 2019: In November of 1996, I was in England with my friend Helen and throughout our days in London and our subsequent stay in the Cotswolds we repeatedly heard the catchy/earwormy/eventually somewhat irritating, refrain, “tell me what you want, what you really really want!” It was playing everywhere and people (including Helen and I) were singing along. The Spice Girls had arrived.

The group, actually formed about two years earlier, consisted of Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice"), Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice") and Melanie Chisholm ("Sporty Spice").

Wannabe, the Spice Girls' debut single, was released by Virgin Records in the United Kingdom in July 1996.

In this video, the group sings in New York at a reunion tour in 2008.

The Spice Girls have announced a six date summer tour in the UK (sans Posh/Victoria Beckham) beginning in June this year.
