17 AUG 2018: It is especially heart wrenching when a voice that epitomised and symbolized an era – in this case many eras, decades and generations - is stilled. Aretha Franklin, whose legendary voice gave her an enduring reign as the Queen of Soul, has died at 76.

"Aretha helped define the American experience," former President Barack Obama said in a statement. "In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade - our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace."

She was respected and honoured. She sang at the Obama inaugural, and later at the Kennedy Centre honours while the President wiped a tear from his eye. She sang at the Clinton White House and the President sang along.

To see and hear Aretha Franklin was an amazing experience – you sang, you danced, you were uplifted. She was a voice for your soul.

Franklin died at her home Thursday morning surrounded by family and friends.

Remember and enjoy.
