06 JUL 2018: Many, many years ago I saw Harry Belafonte perform at what was then The O’Keefe Centre in Toronto – and fell in love. Belafonte was a regular in this city and I never missed a performance if I could help it. Add his amazing talent and charisma to his advocacy and support of political and humanitarian causes, his work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and Harry Belafonte commands respect as a performer and a man of integrity and conscience.

One of the most successful Jamaican-American pop stars in history, he was dubbed the "King of Calypso" for popularizing the Caribbean musical style with an international audience in the 1950s. His breakthrough album Calypso (1956) was the first million-selling LP by a single artist.

Belafonte has recorded in many genres, including blues, folk, gospel, show tunes, and American standards. Here, for those of us who love all the islands in the sun ...
