24 AUG 2017: Striking ground crew workers at Toronto's Pearson Airport have rejected their latest contract offer by a 98 per cent margin. This means a walkout that began in late July by Swissport employees will continue.

A spokesman for Teamsters Union Local 419 says the 98 per cent vote is slightly higher than a vote held last month that triggered the walkout.

Christopher Monette says the latest offer was almost identical to the first one and all Swissport did was “change a few details.”

The 700 cabin cleaners, baggage handlers, and other ground crew workers handle 30 airlines at the airport, including Air Transat, Sunwing Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Air France, KLM and Lufthansa.

Air Canada and WestJet are not serviced by Swissport.

The strike has not significantly affected passengers, although the airport has warned travellers that some flights could be affected.
