23 MAR 2016: William “Bill” Maguire was a well known and popular figure in the Canadian travel industry. Bill died suddenly but peacefully this weekend at home and with his wife Doris by his side.
Bill enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Reserve) in 1943 and started his military career in the Army later transferring to the Royal Canadian Navy. After after a long career in sales he became a certified travel agent and opened Maguire Travel from 1979-1999.
In 1982 Bill joined The Association of Canadian Travel Agents (ACTA). He sat on the National Board of Directors and was subsequently elected Ontario president and then National president.
He also served his community as a member of the Lions Club of Cobourg where he was an active member for 50 plus years, holding several elected positions within his local club and district and was elected by the Lions of the World, as International Director of Lions Clubs for a two year term from 1977 to 1979.
Bill was invited, and served, as the only public sector advisor to the passport division of External Affairs and International Trade, Canada, from 1992-1999.
He was also a recipient of the Queen’s Golden as well as the Diamond Jubilee Medal for his voluntary contributions to his community and to Canada in general.
Bill and his wife Doris have lived in the Cobourg area for over 58 years and celebrated their 68th anniversary in 2015.
Bill Maguire was a huge force in helping to build the Canadian travel industry and its success today owes much to his efforts.
