30 DEC 2013: For anyone who knew Nancy Abbott, 2013 draws to a close on a tragic note. On December 26th, Nancy succumbed to the cancer that she had faced and battled with courage, dignity and determination for so many years.
For the past seven years, Nancy has been account director, sales & business development with VoX International Inc. Previously she had worked with Air Ontario, Just Vacations (now Merit Group) and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism.
Nancy loved her job and particularly those aspects of it that allowed her to use her knowledge and give of herself. She loved the face to face contact with industry peers or consumers at trade shows and teaching seminars. To meet up with Nancy at such occasions, or at a conference or function, was always a joy. There was that beaming smile, a welcoming hug and a friendly chat. She never seemed to be down, or to complain, and I never heard her refer to her illness except in response to questions about her health and then always with the most casual, "oh well, on with life" attitude.
Nancy Abbott epitomised decency, kindness and compassion. She had a lovely sense of humour and a joyfulness that made time spent in her company a pleasure. If only there were more like her in this industry - and in this world.
Our condolences to her son Matthew, her sister Diane Keefe, and to all her friends, relatives and colleagues, not forgetting Finnegan - about whom we swapped many dog stories.
Whatever the year ahead holds, whatever wonderful events may occur personally or globally, for those of us privileged to have even fleetingly known her, 2014 will be a lesser place without Nancy Abbott.
A celebration of Nancy's life will take place on Thursday January 2nd with the visitation from 11am-12pm and service from 12 - 1pm.
Her sister Diane Keefe, also well known within the travel industry, says, "Nancy would want the ladies to wear bling, great shoes and a fabulous purse to her celebration!"
Ain't that the truth.
