N eil Cooper Winter was born in Gillingham, Kent England on November 3, 1935. He started his Travel Career in 1957 when he joined University Tours Ltd after emigrating from Ireland. Later he was vice president of International Sales for Holiday Inn Canada.

Neil always ‘gave back’.  He was actively involved in the travel industry, serving as chairman of the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) and as president of Destination Canada. Neil was also active within ACTA, CSTAR and Skal.

As the accolades poured in, possibly the most frequently heard words were “decent” and “gentleman”.  Not terms often heard in any industry these days, but Neil Winter was one of a kind – he was those things and much more.

Here are just a few comments:

Neil was the third Chair for TICO, having been elected by the "industry at large" to the TICO Board of Directors in 1998, for a three year term. Neil was elected Chair of the Board for a one year term in 1999.

This is very sad news for our industry, Neil has been an outstanding ombudsman for travel; knowledgeable, passionate, honest, humorous - a gentleman in all respects. He will be sadly missed and remembered by many people.
Michael Pepper, CEO, Travel Industry Council of Ontario

Neil was a gentleman and a gentle man. His integrity and ethics in all of his actions both personal and in business, were and are, a benchmark for us all to aspire to. If the world were more populated by people like Neil, it would be a far better place for us all. He will be much missed.
Long time business colleague Doreen Lynch

Neil Winter was the most decent man I ever met in travel.
Vicki Borenstein, founder Last Minute Club

Neil is survived by his wife Doreen and children Karen, Patrick and Mark Winter and Stuart and Brian Morcombe.
